Meidling – der schiachste Bahnhof Wiens

Von der Dörfelstraße bis zum Schedifkaplatz erstreckt sich im Süden Wiens der zweitwichtigste Bahnhof Wiens – das behauptet zumindest Wikipedia. Wie dieser zweite Platz zustande kommt, wird einem aber nicht mitgeteilt. Zweitbeste Anlaufstelle, wenn einem um zwei Uhr nachts mal schnell das Rauschgift ausgegangen sein sollte? Man würde hier mit Sicherheit auf der Suche nach Nachschub fündig werden. Zweitbester Bahnhofs-Treff für Vollzeit-Trinker? Auch nicht unwahrscheinlich.

Vor dem „Prunkstück“ der Bahnhofsgegend, dem Bereich vor dem McDonalds, tummeln sich nämlich bereits tagsüber derartig zwielichtige Gestalten, dass man als Otto-Normalverbraucher schnellstmöglich das Weite sucht. Die aufdringlichen Augustin-Verkäufer sind wohl noch die freundlichsten Gesellen, die man hier antrifft. Der Geruchs-Cocktail aus fahlem Bier und ausgedämpften Tschick rundet das Gesamterlebnis ab. Nachts macht man sowieso am besten einen weiten Bogen um dieses Gelände. Okay, als Wiener weiß man, dem Praterstern ist so trotzdem nicht beizukommen. Meidling muss sich also mit Platz zwei zufrieden geben – das scheint fair.

In einem verzweifelten Versuch das – auf gut Wienerisch – Gsindl zu vertreiben, hat die Stadt Wien den angesprochenen Bereich 2014 generalsaniert. Gebracht hat das herzlich wenig – im Gegenteil: das Gsindl ist deutlich mehr geworden. Dafür haben’s die Spitzbuben jetzt schöner. Irgendwie rührend, dieses Wien.

Ein Hauch von großer Welt

Frankfurt, Zürich, Prag. Was haben diese Städte gemeinsam? Richtig, sie alle sind ohne Umsteigen vom Bahnhof Meidling erreichbar. Eigentlich müsste man sich genieren, stelle man sich vor, wie sich Reisende aus Großstädten fühlen, die den Wiener Charme kennenlernen wollen und als Erstes den Bahnhof Meidling zu Gesicht bekommen. Vielleicht sollte man das mal mit den Kollegen vom Wien Tourismus besprechen. Wäre spannend, was die dazu zu sagen hätten.

Der Tod muss ein Wiener sein

Wie es sich für ein Low-Light Wiens gehört, darf die so berühmte Morbidität der Stadt nicht fehlen. Verkörpert wird diese hier vom Meidlinger Friedhof. Zugegeben, er ist nicht so prächtig wie der Wiener Zentralfriedhof. Aber er steht für die Entschleunigung, die unter anderem dafür verantwortlich ist, dass Wien die lebenswerteste Stadt der Welt ist. In jeder anderen Millionenmetropole Europas wäre wohl neben dem zweitwichtigsten Bahnhof eine riesige Einkaufs-Mall. In Wien ist es ein Friedhof. Das ist doch auch was. Außerdem ist es nicht unpraktisch, wenn man zu spät für eine Verabredung ist und Blumen mitbringen möchte. Muss ja keiner wissen, dass es Friedhofs-Blumen sind.

Immer wachsam

Schlussendlich kommen wir zu meinem persönlichen Helden. Er steht beim Badnerbahn-Abgang Schedifkaplatz. Er ist ein schmächtiger Herr mit Brille. In seiner Hand hält er die Zeitschrift „Wachturm“ der Zeugen Jehovas. Woher meine Bewunderung kommt? Als ich bei meinem ersten Volksschulausflug am Bahnhof Meidling vorbeikam, stand er auch schon da. Er sah genau so aus wie heute. Und hatte auch schon den „Wachturm“ in der Hand. Das war vor beinahe 20 (!) Jahren. Seit damals ist kein Tag vergangen, an dem ich am Meidlinger Bahnhof vorbeigekommen wäre und ihn nicht gesehen hätte. Ein Exemplar verkaufen habe ich ihn übrigens noch nie gesehen. Macht er niemals Urlaub? Jehova macht ja schließlich auch keinen Urlaub. Oder so.
